Since the adoption by UNESCO in 2003 of The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage a growing global consensus is emerging as to the importance of celebrating and preserving peoples’ diverse cultural inheritances for the future of humanity. This summit is one of the outcomes of the work of TIILC (Institute of Intercultural Learning and Communication) and the many organisations worldwide that promote intercultural learning and communication. Central to their work is connecting people of different cultures in local and global learning communities and enhancing understanding of peoples’ diverse cultural identities. In this context TIILC is currently pioneering a campaign to develop innovative approaches for exploring and explaining peoples’ cultural inheritances 

EXHIBITION

Delegates interested in exhibiting materials or contributing a performance illustrating their country’s cultural heritage should do so by completing and returning an exhibition form available from the TIILC website. Early notification is essential due to the limitations of space. Contributions in the following formats are welcomed. Digital and Written Publications, Visual Arts & Crafts: (e.g. pottery, textiles, baskets, stone and metal carving, toys and paintings) and Performance (including poetry reading)

SUMMIT PURPOSE & THEMES

The objective of the 21st Century World Women’s Cultural Heritage Inaugurlal Summit is to bring people together working in practice, policy and theory to:

The 21st century World Women’s Heritage Summit is designed to celebrate and explore approaches to the preservation of women’s cultural heritage to reinforce UNESCO’s 2003 convention, and the British Council’s and the Department for International Development’s global policies and practices. The summit provides an international forum for debate and discussion about women’s cultural heritage and implications for its preservation in contemporary society. It also offers organisations worldwide the chance to debate women’s contributions to global cultural heritage – by exploring contemporary world heritage and development agendas from broad practice, policy and theoretical perspectives.

SPEAKERS

Speakers are national and international heritage experts, researchers, practitioners and cultural explainers (with a wealth of expertise in museums, galleries, libraries and archives), and experts from development education, non-governmental organisations and government departments.
