TIILC BACKGROUND

TIILC emerged from a project of the charity AWAD [African Women's Arts, Culture, Heritage and Development - International Network]. AWAD, since it was formally constituted in April 2000, has achieved the status of the leading UK based grassroots African women's organisation promoting their arts, culture and development. AWAD's own origins lie in the inaugural African Women's Arts International Conference in 1994 - a collaborative initiative between The Calabash - Arts of Africa and the British Council. It attracted people of influence from across the world and the exhibition was opened by Baroness Chalker of the Department of Overseas Development.
